New Scottish Parliament Building

October 9th, 2004 · 3 Comments · Things What Look Good

The new Scottish Parliament building opened today, the first Scottish assembly in 300 years. The building is a pretty amazing piece of work — check out these photos. The window seat is particularly slick.

It wasn’t the first assembly today, we got that on July 1 1999, but the parliament sat (squatted?) with the Church of Scotland until now.

I agree that the building is incredible (designed by the late Enric Miralles of Barcelona), I just wish more Scots felt the same way (as ever with parliament buildings, it was late and over budget).

Now, if we could just find the politicians to match up to the building…

The building is amazing. I was a little sceptical because from outside some parts look a little like an airport terminal building. However, I recently took a tour round the place and it works phenomenally well, the debating chamber is a work of genius. Oak and granite and slate and glass merge old and new beautifully.

I think the people of Scotland are coming round to the idea that it is a neat place, we just like to criticise things for a while just to make things tough for everyone…

I think the building is an amazing piece of architecture. However I do feel that it would have been a better idea to have it designed by a scottish architect (with all respect to the late Enric Miralles).
