Flickr on the London bombings

We set the alarm clock to go off a little before 6AM; I usually lay in bed half-asleep for a half-hour or so while Carole walks the dog. This morning my eyes popped open when I heard about the bombings on the radio news. Sucks.

I was amazed to see (although I shouldn’t have been) the terrific photo coverage of this on Flickr. The Wikipedia entry for this is apparently getting updated every 30 seconds or so, too. The mainsteam media is getting smoked by the Web (and thousands of people with cameraphones). Inspiring. Maybe news reporting isn’t dead, it’s just being taken back by the people.

Update: The Associated Press has a story today on how amateurs with camera phones scooped mainstream news photographers with a mention of how Flickr fit in.
