Seu Jorge

A while back I promised myself I’d try to post more frivolous and fun stuff on this blog to counterbalance the rants posted by the angry little demon of product management trapped in my head whose mission in life is to criticize other peoples’ products. I was going to post more "funny" stuff, but being "funny" on a regular basis is hard work, so instead I think I’m going to post tunes and artists I’m discovering on Y! Music Unlimited. Plus, as I mentioned to Toni week before last, it seems like all the cool venture capital blogs these days are comprised of a mix of incisive industry observations and rock and roll music reviews, so I thought I’d be like the cool kids and post some myself.

This week I’m all about Seu Jorge, particularly the tune Mania De Peitão (Jamais Plus Jamais Mix). I cannot imagine that Doug has not discovered this guy yet but if not, he’s right in the groove with the Brazillian stuff that he’s been spinning lately. He’s got a terrific voice and I’ve always thought that Portugese is the most beautiful language ever. If you saw The Life Aquatic you might recognize Seu Jorge as the dude who did the acoustic Portugese covers of Bowie tunes throughout the movie; an excellent collection of those tunes is available on Y! Music Unlimited too.

I should mention that I am biting my lip each time I see Y! Music Unlimited ads on TV or online because while I like the ads themselves, they aren’t clear about what the service actually is or how to get started with it. So: step one is to go here and click on the big yellow Get It Now! button to download the music engine client for Windows. You can use the client to organize your music, buy tracks and listen to internet radio, then if you want to step up to the subscription service later you can if you want. Easy, fun, cheap, party on, etc.

Update: Seu Jorge will be playing in SF’s Stern Grove, mere minutes from my house, on June 18, according to this post on Upcoming.org. However, I would be surprised if I could go, since the plan is to have a newborn baby bumping around that week. (On the other hand, we did take baby #1 to a Giants game within weeks of her birth, so anything is possible, I suppose.)

Also, I forgot to point out that "Mania De Peitão" means "Large-Chested Madness." It’s the little details like this that turn a good song into a perfect work of art.
