Update on the DIY PC I posted about previously. I flipped the switch. It didn’t turn on. No idea why. I suspect it was because I didn’t connect a wire I was supposed to connect, or because a wire I was supposed to connect isn’t connected in the right way.
The thing is put together, silently mocking me and occupying most of the biggest table in our house (the dining room). I didn’t want that state of affairs to bum the wife out too much, so I told her I’d give it one more look-see (probably tonight) and if I couldn’t get it working, I’d take it to one of the many fine computer shops in our neighborhood this weekend and pay them to get it working. (If I’m forced to do this, I will be humiliated. I hope they don’t laugh at me when I bring my non-functional computer in. Sigh.)

I’ve installed 3 new motherboards and 2 new power supplies (don’t ask) and each time I swear I’m going to splurge and get a new PC @ Dell for $499. Hardware is cheap and my patience is running thin as I get older. It is so easy to mount the motherboard in a slightly wonky way and have it short without telling you, leaving you with a big metal paperweight. The only way to diagnose this is to have a spare PC so that you can swap out your core components (power supply, CPU, mobo) for known good components. May the force be with you, and remember: it’s nothing the neighbor’s kid can’t fix at a reasonable price.
