California Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban

Our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation.
Dear other 48 states: there is this thing called equal protection under the law, have you heard of it?
>>…have you hear it?<<
I’ll be curious to see if California voters embrace the concept of equal protection when they vote in November on a constitutional ban against same-sex marriage. It’s a ‘long and winding road’ to equality.
For sure. I’m optimistic that voters have come around on this issue since it last came up on the ballot in California. Certainly a lot of conservatives are split on it — and now we have the benefit of a few year’s worth of data in places like Canada and Massachusetts that demonstrates that the sky doesn’t fall if you let people marry whoever they want.
This is the kind of thing where the liberals don’t do as good a job framing the debate as the conservatives do. They should be referring to this issue as “freedom to marry” rather than “gay marriage.” The state has no business saying who I can and can’t marry; if the state can take away the right to marry from one group they could take it away from anybody.
